More from THE CHLOE CHRONICLES: PART II - "Home, Again"
On bringing home your new rescue dog...from BARK MAGAZINE
Greetings Beloved Readers—
I’m thrilled that I can now write readers as a plural. I now have more than one subscriber :) I still haven’t had a chance to promote my new Substack series, but I also trust the Universe to assist with word of mouth. And I trust that whoever will benefit from my words will eventually find them. So thank you to those who have already subscribed and have started to share. I am so grateful.
As I wrote in last week’s post, I am going to be sharing all the installments of my series “The Chloe Chronicles” which appeared in the late, great Bark magazine in the late Aughts. It was a short series—maybe twelve installments or so—cut short, sadly, by Chloe’s sudden death. But let’s not get ahead of the story. My plan is to share these pieces in chronological order (meaning the order in which they appeared in Bark) and also share a bit about the writing process. But I currently cannot find a PDF or digital copy of Part I. (Note to all our beloved Millenials and Gen Z-ers: Bark originated in the days before digital magazines, so often my only record of my own published work exists in the form of tear-sheets—printed pages pulled from the physical magazine. And all my tear sheets are in a storage space, way at the back, of course. I need to hire a team of burly men just to access my files. And who has time for that?) Anyway, this is all just back-story. If I can’t find the PDF of the final printed version by next Friday, I can always share the original unedited piece (we’re talking a 6000 word essay that my editor at Bark made me machete down to 2200 words). My pieces in Bark were always heavily edited because — as you may have noted from these preludes — I tend to be verbose, with a circular, vortex-y way of telling a story, spirals within spirals. My Bark editor liked to get Straight To The Point. Imagine that…. :)
And now on to Part II of the Chloe Chronicles. This installment appeared in the Sept/Oct 2011 issue of Bark. The illustration comes from a photograph of Chloe by Amanda Jones, with drawings by Mark Todd. As usual, I have redacted the advertisements (which are vintage at this point). So am I, friends; so am I.
PS - I’m sharing these old pieces because I really believe in the benefits of animal rescue—benefits for the dog and benefits for the people. I also believe strongly in positive reinforcement. So my hope is that whoever reads these pieces will feel inspired to rescue a needy dog.
PPS - I just filled out an application to adopt a Vizsla puppy in PA.
